May 9, 2023 - Day 3 to Ontario

 May 9, 2023 - Day 3 to Ontario

This morning started out at 55 degrees.  It stayed this way for most of the day.  It was much more of a picturesque day.  I took so many pics.  The day could not have been any better: blue skies and very clear. Enjoy.  We have such a beautiful country!!!

Farmers started out early today and there were lots of them.

As we leave Lumar, these are some of the street signs.
We all thought his was interesting concept, but whatever works.

After driving for about an hour, we saw mountains.  YEAH, it is not flat.

Only sad part is there are so many windmills, it kind of took away from the mountains.

As you ride thru the flat open areas, you will often see these fences.  This helps keep the snow from drifting across the road.

There are a lot of areas where hundreds of acres were burnt.  You can already see in some sections where the forest is regrowing. Sad so much is gone.

Ron was able to get a pic of Larry and me.  So pretty.

Next stop is lunch: Creede, CO.  It is a little mining town.  The town is not very big and it seems most restaurants were closed.  We stop at the visitor's center to check what is open.  They tell us that many of them are closed on Tuesday.  Really?  We did find one.  They also told us that in 2 weeks this area would be packed.  Kids out of school so families love the area for hiking, history, .....  Also there are lots of people from Texas that go there for summer homes.

Here is Tommyknockers Tavern.  GREAT food.

These are dollar bills on the ceiling.  One of them had Vin Diesel's name on it.
 Interesting. Was he really there?

We are standing in the middle of the road getting our picture taken.
Not much going on this time of year.

One of the old mining entrances still hanging in there.

We were told that this area is where a lot of the new homes are being built.
Pretty cool with the mountains and the river all around them.

Heading out of town, Larry sees a sign to look out for long horn sheep.  About 2 minutes later, there are about 10-12 of them.  They happened to be on the road side of the fence.  YIKES!!..
I hope you can see this.

Then they head for the fence and jump over.  It was pretty funny to see, they looked like jumping beans.

Now we head to Gunnison National Forest.  It was beautiful!!!  (Sorry you will see this word a lot) and a little chilly.  You will see why.

One of my favorite pic of the day.

Elevation is 11,580 and temps were about 45 degrees.

On the way down, we see this guy biking up.  OH MY!!!

Our destination is Gunnison, CO.  Halfway from lunch and Gunnison, it is a small town called Lake City.  A "cool" place to stop. Check out the few lakes I got pics of.
Pretty wild since it is still 8900 feet in elevation.

Last few pics for the day.  Hope tomorrow is as awesome.

Destination: Gunnison, CO

Temps: 55-45

Route: US-50, CO-160, CO-149, US-50

Total Miles: 378

Can you guess where this flag pic was taken. :-)

Hint we are still in Colorado.
