May 11, 2025 - Day 8 to Ontario
Today we head to Ontario but first we have 2 stops: Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon.
Before that I was going to show you a pic of Brad Paisley from last night at the Encore. No band behind him. He was changing some of the words and interacting with the audience. Great entertainer.
Kind of funny to see the casino in the morning. Pretty empty.
Heading to the dam is a field 1.5 miles long of solar panels. WOW. On the other side for about a mile was the same thing. I guess they need lots of power for all the lights in Vegas!!
Then all the power lines. This looks like a nightmare of wires but it works.
If you ever get the chance to go to Hoover Dam, do it. Also take the tour. It is amazing how this was built. We did this several years ago (2019). At the time, they said Lake Mead (that feeds the dam) would run out of water. Ron looked up the water levers. It has been up and down over the last several years. It is down 20 feet from 2019 when we were there. Here is the pic I took 2019
Here are a few pics.
Here is the spillway. The last time this was used was 1983.
The dam is in Arizona and Nevada
Ever want to be in 2 places at once? Today I was. (OK kind of corny)
Here is the power lines/structure at the site of the dam. Again how this all works is a mystery to me.
We rode to an overlook to see Lake Mead. The marina docks were in the water but the ramps did not look so good. Looks like they had to back down a long way to launch a boat.
A Tesla Cybertruck. REALLY? A truck? OK
We stopped for lunch at a Bojangles. They were handing out blue berry biscuits in the shape of a heart.
For Mother's Day.
Next, on to Red Rock Canyon.
Similar to Valley of Fire but not as many red rocks. Still pretty.
Pretty cool on this ride thru the park. It is about a 45 minute ride.
I know I have been showing you a bunch of rock, but unless you see them them in person,
the pics do not do it justice.
Along several sections were these purple flowers. It added to the landscape.
Also we kept seeing signs to watch out for tortoises. Darn, we never did see one.Now we head down I15. It was one of the hottest days at 100-104 for the next 4 hours.
Lots of stops for water and Gatorade.
Kind of boring on colors (or lack of) and flat and HOT. Did I mention it was hot.
I did get a good pic of Larry. Same boring background. It gave me something to do.
This is the same route we will be taking as we leave on the Run on Wednesday.
Starting tomorrow, teams will be reconnecting with their team members and finalizing items. This is a huge mission and it takes a lot of people to pull it all together. In the days that follow, I hope you see why the Run is still so important to so many people.
