August 15, 2025 - Bend OR to Crescent City CA
Normally we go to the hotel lobby and get a little breakfast. Larry got there before I did, and he and several others are laughing. It happened that he was sitting with a few guys also riding motorcycles touring some of the same places. The 3 guys were all retired from the service: Army, Marines and Navy. He said he was sitting in the middle to keep them apart..... HAHAHA.
They ended up talking motorcycle as we were leaving. OK boys let's go (that conversation could go on for a long time).
As you can tell the day started out wonderful.
Check out the colors and the cloud formations.
Interesting sign....I guess they really do not want anyone going the wrong way!!!
But is was well worth it. We get to Crater Lake National Park.
We see snow. You know we are up in elevation.
Then we see the lake!!! OMG The blue is just .....
Check out this pole for the snow. I have some fun fact below and you will see why.
We head around to another side of the lake.
Such vastness of the land. So many different colors.
We could not get over the blue of the lake.
This is actual a very deep crevice in the side.
I guess Ron needed a little rest.
In the gift shop I found this. Pretty funny.
Ok lets head down to get gas. (I hope you can tell, that is Ron.)
We stop at probably the only gas station for miles. Remember a few days ago, there was a full service gas station. Well, guess what, here is another one. This guy comes out and hands Ron the hose. (I am sure they do not fill motorcycles.)
Then I looked at the pump. It has to be from the 70s. There is no credit card reader, the number turn on a dial (not digital), and you have to lift a lever to start the gas. I would imagine most of the younger folks probably would not know how to even use this. All the way down, there is a river.
We talked about how fast and high this river is in the spring with the snow melting.
We see this little deli/general store. The guys at the gas station said to stop here or it would be another 50 miles to next place to get something to each. What a great stop!
You pick up a paper on the stack on the right. There is one for condiments on you hot dog and the other one is for condiments on a deli sandwich.
I ended up getting a "walking taco". One of the best I have had. Fresh air, a long ride, and the fact I was pretty hungry had nothing to do with it.
On the bathroom door. Love this!!!!
So..... we started asking questions about Crater Lake. Here are our fun facts.
- It is 1949 feet, making the deepest lake in the United States and the 9th in the world.
- It is not connected to any water source. The lake is a result of ground water flow, rain and snow.
- Since there is no other water source, this is considered one of the cleanest lakes in the world.
- It is one of the snowiest lakes in the US. It gets about 43 FEET of snow annually.
- The water level has very little fluctuation in the last 100 year.
- It is 5 miles long and 2 miles wide
- Temp are 68-74 degrees
- There are no roads that lead to the lake. So if you want a boat there, you need to have it winched down
- You can swim but you need to go 700 feet to get there.
- Elevation: surface of lake 6178 feet above sea level, the rim ranges 7000-8000 feet
Getting a little overcast, but still great colors.
Yeah... finally on Route 101.....wow was it foggy. I got a few good pics. I hope tomorrow will be sunny. We are heading the Redwood National Park via 101.
This is Ron.
I think this one has been in dry dock for a little while. What do you think?
Heading back from dinner, we are serenaded by some seals. They were sitting on some kind of platform and they were VERY loud.
