Day 3 of the Run - May 15

Today was not too good from the weather standpoint.  They were predicting rain off and on all day.

We found out today the Leroy Petry’s bike broke down yesterday.  He will not be continuing the mission.

Also I mentioned how well this is so organized.  I found out today that we arrived at our destination our first day with in 2 minutes of the itinerary.  That is crazy..... we road 400 miles.  Amazing!!

Larry went to look out the window to see if it was raining.  Next to his bike was one of the "Road Guard" bikes,  and it was covered in cellophane and "caution" tape.  She is a rookie.  So she took it off a put it on back.  She is already thinks of what is in store for the rookie next year.

As we do every day, we start with the pledge and a prayer. This morning a local person, “Feathers” said it.  Mayor Jackie McKinney (below, mayor) also attended and road a bit with us.  He was very much apart of RFTW for several years.

The team had to load Gatorade and water for the hydration team.

As we leave, I noticed this gentleman. Amazing as to the patriotism we see. This is seen every day!!!

One of the kids from Gallup this morning, handed out a few thanks you notes.  if you enlarge the one on the left, please try.  and read. Here is what it actually says but check out the spelling:
Dear thank you soldier for all you have done for me.  Thank you for leaving your family and going to a different country for us and fighting the silver (i think she means "civil") rights. I'm greatful for all that you do.  You do a great job to make our city a better place.  Thank you soldier. Secretly. Amari
The other one says "Well come home"  :-)   soo cute and so sincere.
 Ready to roll !!!
Here is what we saw as we were leaving this morning.

I want to show a few pics of the road guards.  These guys do so much.  They stop traffic on the entrance ramps, they hold cars on the side so we can pass as a group. Then they fly past all the platoon to get to the front and do it again.  With all the rain we had today, they were outstanding. Every day, on the entrance ramps they stop traffic. They have each turned manned and showing us where to go.  It is at all gas stops, lunches, etc. A great group of people that work really hard to keep us save.

As we pulled into our second gas stop, we see Gunny and his wife.  He is an amazing man.
We had all gas stops paid for today.  Gas stops are so organized.  My hats off to the fuel team.
This morning Catfish came over to talked to Larry.  He wanted him in the 6 pack again today.  The reason was during the second leg, we were to ride the "Missing Man" formation.

Glenn   this is for you.The RFTW ride is for all our veterans to bring them home.  We found no greater honor than to be allowed to ride for Glenn.  As we rode, I looked over at the empty spot next to me, and brother Glenn, you were there, watching over us.  I thought of what we talked about before we left, what you went thru then and how your life is not easy today.  Thanks for coming home.
OH, not sure if Larry looked to much as he had to keep his eyes on the road, since it was raining a lot.  But he was so honored to allowed to do this. Hope you can ready is writing...looks just like yours.

There you are Glenn, Right next to me.  You are looking pretty good !!
Lunch was paid for by Camel Rock Casino.  What a beautiful set up.  Kids greeted us as we came in.

It was pouring down rain and that is never fun.  Here is Larry as I guess he is ready to roll.
so are Dave and Gomez. Gomez however had no rain suit and by the time we got to our next stop his teeth were chattering.  It was in the 40s and we were about 8200 feet.

Here is our escort.  Pretty sweet. We had the expressway to ourselves!!!  Thanks to these guys and our Road Guards

After lunch we headed to Angel Fire Vietnam Veteran Memorial.  Here are some pics from the ride and people greeting us.

Even the cows all turned our way !!!
On the way to the  memorial from for David Westphall

Here are a few of the guys. Was a nasty, wet and cold ride but worth every minute to be able to see this. If you cannot tell , this is Brian and Tim.

This memorial is for David Westphall III. I have attached some pictures.  This also has many memorabilia  from Vietnam and the men that server.  There are hundreds of bricks. Jenny has told me that they have helped lay some of them

Since Leroy Petry is from New Mexico, they also had a nice area dedicated to him

We are in Eagle Nest NM.  There are about 297 people here and we just doubled the population when we arrived.  Yet another town that opened it arms to the RFTW group.  We were all cold, wet, hungary and just ready to take a hot shower.  As we walked into the hall for dinner, there were 5 or 6 ladies there that wrapped their arms around  you welcoming you and trying to get you warm. All of them thanking us for coming and for the mission we are on.  To make it to DC and bring our guys home.  What a wonderful spread of food they had.
 This was hand made
This cake was huge and REALLY good!!

Hard to tell but it was snowing..... YES I said snowing
 This is main street.

We are at about 8200 feet and it was COLD.  About 35 at night. Good day and GREAT people.
