October 9, 2022 - Cambridge, MA

 October 9, 2022 - Cambridge, MA

Today was another beautiful day.  Temps in the 50s.  NO RIDING the bikes today.

We head into downtown Boston for some touristy action.  We took the Harbor cruise first and it was very informative.  Beautiful day in the bay.

One of the most interesting facts we heard was that Boston is on 75% man-made land.
Meaning they grew the land into the bay.  A pretty wild concept.  Gray area is the man-made part.

The next 2 pictures are across the bay from each other and mark the Ted WIlliams tunnel. The buildings are the ones with the triangular shapes.

This was pretty cool.  The ship reflection is in the building.

Logan airport is totally on man-made land.

It was a bit cold on the top of the boat.

Here is a great pic of the Zikam bridge.

Here is the actual USS Constitution, aka Old Ironside.  And to the right is the Bunker Hill Towner.  The Zikam bridge uses replica of the tower and the cables in its design.

  • It is the oldest war ship afloat.
  • It was hit 19 time and no damage.
  • The walls are 27 inches thick.
  • 55 heavy cannons on two decks
  • 6 miles of cables
  • 44 sails—almost an acre of canvas
  • 250 Hammick for sleeping in the lower deck
  • 450 Men on board.
Think about the weight this ship has to carry:
Cannons, cannon balls, gun powder, people, food,......

Smaller cannons on the main deck.

Lower deck, look how they are lined up.

Outside view.

Look at the cables.  Holy Cow!!!!    Hard to figure out where they all go.

Here are the hammocks.

Everyone on this deck was ducking.  But Jackie could walk normally, but barely.

Here is a list of commanding officers.
I know it is hard to see, but there is one for 2022.

When we were on the top deck, we happened to see this.  Two men, twins, both served in the army, were able to raise 2 flags.  It is a service that is done by the staff on the ship.

As we leave, Larry and Jamie try to find the hole where it was shot.

Back of the boat is pretty cool.

Next and last stop is to the "Cheers" bar.
And of course, we had to have a beer.

Three bars.  Here is the lower one.  PACKED!!!

Here is the 2nd floor.  Crowded but at least we could get a beer.

Temps 51-62
Miles: 0
